Supermarket Secrets

March 30, 2007 by jdaviescoates 4 Comments

via Celsias... An excellent two part Dispatches documentary on Supermarkets Secrets. Well worth watching. The amount of waste is crazy. And the way the animals most people eat are bred and treated is neither nice nor healthy. "How and what we eat has radically changed over the past few decades with the all-consuming rise of the supermarket. But what price are we paying for the homogenised, cheap and convenient food that supermarkets specialise in? In a two-part programme, journalist Jane … [Read more...]

Prophecy, Peak Oil and the Path for the Faithful

March 30, 2007 by jdaviescoates Leave a Comment

I recently watched this video and thought it was really good summary of some of the important issues it covers. If you are a Christian you might want to get it shown in your church or invite Rev Sam Norton along for a talk. Even if you don't classify yourself as a Christian (I don't), it is still very informative and interesting... A summary of Rev Sam Norton's recommendations found in this film can been found here … [Read more...]

Carbon Con update

March 5, 2007 by jdaviescoates 1 Comment

A while ago, prompted by a load of Hub members sending details about numerous Carbon "offsetting" companies to the Hub list, I wrote The Carbon Con. One of the comments I got was from tav of green.tv "well said! wish more people would think like this." Thankfully it seems more people do now indeed think like this. Going through the news that I've aggregated on the Commons Creation site, I ended up reading a member's blog, which in turn led me Dougald Hine's excellent blog where I saw this … [Read more...]

Very Exciting News

January 27, 2007 by jdaviescoates 1 Comment

Yesterday I had the most amazing and inspiring phone call ever. A man called Ray called me from Cornwall, 2km from where Oli was already but totally randomly literally on his way to (thanks to Katharine), and basically said that he wants to entrust his land to a community very much like the commons creation collective - i.e. one with shared values (create a whole new economic system based on new land ownership and monetary systems etc.) he can grow to trust and love. He's got an 1.5 acre and … [Read more...]

The Carbon “Offset” Con

November 1, 2006 by jdaviescoates 3 Comments

Here is the text of an e-mail I sent out earlier today: Sorry to smash the illusion folks, but I've done considerable research into this and carbon "off-sets" are a con. We cannot neutralise, nor "off-set", carbon we have already emitted (or are about to emit by driving, flying etc.) by giving someone £7.5/per tonne of carbon we emit. We cannot consume our ways out of trouble by simply buying a few carbon credits each time we fly, or even by totting up our total carbon footprint for the year … [Read more...]

TODAY: rampART FREE COMMUNITY CINEMA

August 31, 2006 by jdaviescoates Leave a Comment

AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH (2006) Al Gore goes on the campaign trail to persuade audiences to reverse the effects of global climate change. "Humanity is sitting on a ticking time bomb. If the vast majority of the world's scientists are right, we have just ten years to avert a major catastrophe that could send our entire planet into a tail-spin of epic destruction involving extreme weather, floods, droughts, epidemics and killer heat waves beyond anything we have ever experienced." GLOBAL … [Read more...]

Slow Dance

August 23, 2006 by jdaviescoates 1 Comment

This poem was sent to me yesterday by someone for whom I care deeply but have been out of touch with for a while. Apparently it was written by a teenager with cancer who would like as many people as possible to read her poem. Please pass it on. SLOW DANCE Have you ever watched kids On a merry-go-round? Or listened to the rain Slapping on the ground? Ever followed a butterfly's erratic flight? Or gazed at the sun into the fading night? You better slow down. Don't dance so fast. Time is … [Read more...]
