Email to Toby Hemenway re: Piracy

January 27, 2011 by jdaviescoates 95 Comments

NOTE: I've had a series of increasingly great responses from Toby - please see the comments Toby Hemenway, a leading permaculture author sent me a message with very very thinly veiled threat to sue me for including his great book Gaia's Garden here https://files.uniteddiversity.com/Permaculture/ (someone else has also put it up on Scribd) Here is the text of his message: at https://files.uniteddiversity.com/Permaculture/ you have a pirated copy of my book, Gaia's Garden. My publisher, Chelsea … [Read more...]

Towards a Dark Mountain reading list

August 25, 2009 by jdaviescoates 3 Comments

This post by Dougald Hine originally appeared on the Dark Mountain blog Over the last few weeks, a lot of people have asked us to suggest books which pick up on the themes of this project. In time, we’ll add a recommended reading section to the site. As a first step towards that, I thought I’d share a list that I made for a friend who had enjoyed the manifesto and wanted to know where to go next. Writing this, I realise that some people will be surprised by the absence of names like Daniel … [Read more...]

More money books

October 27, 2008 by jdaviescoates 4 Comments

A while back I posted Money Books, a collection of my favourite books all about money. Now, with the global economy struggling on all sides with economic collapse, climate change and peak oil very much beginning to kick in, I thought I share a few more good reads on the subject. Hopefully lots and lots of people will read these books and we can finally move away from Money as Debt madness towards a saner banking system. : [amtap book:isbn=0816649634] "A firsthand view of local currencies … [Read more...]

Money Books

April 20, 2008 by jdaviescoates 2 Comments

After our last Open Coin meeting George Walker took us into his office to continue chatting. He is a fascinating chap, check out his CV (.pdf). In the first OpenCoin meeting he said (in a strong Scottish accent): "I think there is going to be a global currency. I call it the Global. This will either be a top-down currency from the IMF and World Bank, like existing SDRs (Special Drawing Rights), or a bottom-up, grassroots initiative, like what you are doing, which is much more exciting" He … [Read more...]

Recipe for a New World Order?

July 17, 2006 by jdaviescoates 1 Comment

Whilst up in Bedford visiting the farm, I discussed plans for my book with Shane. He thought that Recipes for a New World Order would be a good title; we could reclaim the phrase New World Order (like how I tried to claim Bush's so-called Global Democratic Revolution). I chatted to Saul Albert about it, but he didn't like it, saying that he wouldn't even pick up a book with such a title. Maybe I should just write a load of stuff and self-publish it under a load of different titles to reach … [Read more...]

An Introduction to Planet Earth…

March 7, 2006 by jdaviescoates 2 Comments

I think this is probably the best introduction to Planet Earth I've ever read. Here is my one page edit... Earth is Whole Earth is not flat. Earth is much more than round. Earth is whole. "Earth is Whole" means that all the planet's physical features and living organisms are interconnected. They work together in important and meaningful ways. The clouds, oceans, mountains, volcanoes, plants, bacteria and animals all play important roles in determining how our planet works. Systems within … [Read more...]
