Pam Warhurst: How we can eat our landscapes
I love Pam Warhust. She is such a inspirational, grounded and powerful woman. This is one of my favourite TED talks, by far. Please, watch and share it now. It is about the inspirational story of Incredible Edible Todmorden which has now spawned the Incredible Edible Network. But, as she hints at so powerfully towards the end of the talk, this is about so much more than food. It is about community empowerment. This is about sharing and investing in kindness It is about Community, … [Read more...]

Sheet Mulching by Craig Elevitch and Kim Wilkinson - Permanent Agriculture Resources Why Mulch? Agriculture with mulch in the tropics promotes plant health and vigor. Mulching improves nutrient and water retention in the soil, encourages favorable soil microbial activity and worms, and suppresses weed growth. Why use Compost Tea?
Compost tea is used for two reasons: To inoculate microbial life into the soil or onto the foliage of plants, and to add soluble nutrients to the foliage or to the soil to feed the organisms and the plants present. The use of compost tea is suggested any time the organisms in the soil or on the plants are not at optimum levels. Chemical-based pesticides, fumigants, herbicides and some synthetic fertilizers kill a range of the beneficial microorganisms that encourage plant growth, while compost … [Read more...]
London Vegan Festival
The London Vegan Festival this year took place in Kensington Town Hall, and was absolutely heaving. Usually, the odds of bumping into another vegan are slightly higher than those of two Esperanto speakers meeting, so hanging out in a hall packed full of them was a new experience – as was not having to ask ‘Is there dairy in this?’ at every food stall. Bliss. Almost as soon as someone mentions becoming vegan, people start to get a panicked look on their faces and tend to begin listing reasons … [Read more...]
